Kay Fowler: Lifting Vaulting Higher in Equestrian Sports

For more than two decades, Kay Fowler has made an outstanding contribution to the development and sustainability of equestrian vaulting in Western Australia. Since relocating to WA in 2008, following her involvement in the sport from the early 1990s, Kay has played a central role in building a strong, inclusive vaulting community that supports athletes, coaches, lungers and officials at every stage of their involvement.

Kay’s contribution extends well beyond any single role or club. She is widely recognised for her generosity in sharing knowledge, facilities, horses and resources across the state, ensuring equitable access to opportunities for both metropolitan and regional participants. Her collaborative approach has helped foster a culture of inclusivity, education and professionalism across all levels of the sport.

In 2025, Kay achieved her Level 1 Vaulting Judge accreditation, strengthening the pool of qualified officials in Western Australia. Alongside her judging commitments, she has led and facilitated structured programs to support aspiring lungers in gaining their Equestrian Australia accreditations, making a significant contribution to the long term sustainability of vaulting in the state.

Kay volunteers across five vaulting clubs throughout Western Australia, dedicating extensive hours to mentoring, officiating, coaching and administration. Her ongoing presence at competitions, training camps and clinics ensures participants from grassroots through to elite levels feel supported and guided along their development pathways within the Equestrian Australia framework.

As part of the nomination process, Kay was asked to reflect on her proudest moment in equestrian sport and why it mattered to others. Her response captured the collective spirit of vaulting as a true team sport.

Every time I salute to the judge with the horse and the vaulters on the circle centre. This is what we’ve trained for. This is our moment. Whatever happens, we’ll be back at this spot in a few moments, together with heads high and a smile on our face.

Kay was also asked what advice she would offer equestrians to succeed in the sport, including in skill development, mindset and community. Her response reflects a lifelong commitment to learning and horsemanship.

"Never stop listening, as you never stop learning. Your horse will always have something new to teach you."

Kay’s impact is reflected in increased participation, improved access to education and accreditation, and the strong, supportive culture that now defines vaulting in Western Australia. Through her leadership, mentorship and advocacy, she continues to inspire both current and emerging members of the vaulting community.

In recognition of her exceptional contribution and sustained service, Kay Fowler has been nominated for the Lifetime Service to the Sport Award. This category recognises individuals who have made a significant and enduring contribution to keeping equestrian sport strong in Western Australia. The recipient will be announced at the upcoming Awards Night.
