Vale Michael Merewether

It is with great sadness that we farewell, Micheal Merewether, husband of former Grand Prix Competitor, A level Judge and Level 3 Coach Educator Nadine Merewether.

Michael passed away quietly at home on 7th February with his beloved “Niddy” and his long-term workmate and treasured friend Jacinta Oud.

Michael’s contributions to Equestrian Sport were numerous and significant. In addition to his ongoing support of the sport in general, he ensured that equestrian sport in WA, and Dressage in particular, was well governed and progressive.

The Dressage Club of WA was established in 1978 and was the first dressage specialist club of the time, its mission statement being to provide training for all levels and promote dressage in WA. Michael was heavily involved in the early years, as the chair of the committee, guiding and directing with a firm hand imbued with a strong sense of inclusion.

Michael was a member of now Equestrian WA (EWA) from the early 1980’s and was on the board with Bruce Mills when it was agreed that the State Equestrian Centre (SEC) would be built, a decision that had not only given the sport the strength it has today but has created a central location to facilitate governance.

He served on the Dressage WA Committee from 1983 until 1993, and on the EWA Board of Directors from 1983 – 1990.

It was during his period of tenue on the DWA Committee and the EWA Board that Michael was instrumental on the organising committees of the 1984 Australian Dressage Championships held at Richmond Raceway, the 1985 WA State Championships at the newly opened SEC, and the 1989 Festival of Dressage including the FEI Samsung International, the WA Indoor Championships and the Australian National Championships, all held over two weeks at the SEC. And throughout, proudly supporting his adored wife, who competed in all of those events.

Michael worked tirelessly to ensure each of the events was professionally run to the highest standard.

Today, we enjoy the legacy of Michael’s work and must be proud of and grateful for his very significant contribution.

Michael is survived by his wife Nadine, daughter Anna, son-in-law Glen, grandchildren Weston and Evie and close workmate Cindy.
