Building Courses, Building Community: Fred Freeman’s Contribution to Equestrian Sport
Fred Freeman has been involved in equestrian sport for over forty years and has made a lasting contribution to the discipline both in Australia and across Western Australia. His involvement has included Moonyoonooka Horse and Pony Club and the Geraldton Combined Training Club, and he is widely respected for his expertise in jumping course design.
In recognition of his outstanding service to the equestrian community, Fred has been recognised as a nominee for the Equestrian WA Lifetime Service Award, a fitting acknowledgement of decades spent educating, mentoring, and giving back to the sport.
We asked Fred about the key to success in equestrian sport and some of the moments he is most proud of.
What’s your proudest moment in equestrian sport?
“I am proud to be a Life Member of both Equestrian Western Australia and Pony Club Western Australia, also to be on the current list of EA National Jumping Course Designers Clinic Presenters as well as a National Level 3 Course Designer and Level 1 Judge.
“Being able to present educational clinics on Jumping Course Design to all levels of interested people from riders and parents through to already accredited course designers requiring refreshers to retain their accreditation.
“Having presented a Jumping Course Design Clinic in a country location where a parent was virtually forced to attend a clinic to make up the numbers and found it interesting enough to follow right through to become an active and accredited Jumping Course Designer gave me a lot of pleasure,” Fred said.
These experiences highlight Fred’s passion not only for excellence in course design, but also for developing people and strengthening the sport at all levels.

What advice would you give to equestrians to succeed?
“I would encourage all equestrians to become involved in all aspects of their chosen sport not just as a rider but to volunteer to be on various committees, learn how their sport is run. Not just set up for a particular event because it is ‘their required helper duty’. Learn all about the people that make it all happen, learn about the rules, why they are in place, why they change from time to time, if you don't understand a rule or a certain part of a rule seek advice from an official who will be only too glad to be able to advise and help you.
“Above all enjoy your riding and time spent with horses and the friends you will make, on many occasions that friendship will last a lifetime. Be positive in your approach and thinking towards the sport.” Fred said.
