2016 Annual Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2016 Equestrian Western Australia Awards are now open!

The Awards recognise the top performing athletes and horses, as well as the sport's most outstanding administrator, coach, official, owner, volunteer and event of the past 12 months. All members of EWA, EA or an EWA-affiliated club are able to nominate.

Award winners will be recognised at the Equestrian Western Australia Annual Awards Night which is to be held on Friday 3 February 2017. The venue will be announced shortly and the tickets available for purchase in December. We hope you can join us in celebrating the most dedicated, successful and extraordinary members of WA's equestrian community.

Award Categories and Criteria

Administrator of the Year This award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution during 2016 to the administration of their equestrian sport or club.
Club of the Year This award recognises an EWA affiliated club that fostered participation and enjoyment at all levels of the sport during 2016. The club showed innovation in administration, skills development, and personal growth for members, whilst also providing a broad community appeal.
Community Coach of the Year This award recognises a NCAS coach who has made a significant contribution to the promotion and education of riders of all levels. A community coach is someone who depicts the positive characteristics of a community coach that encourages and promotes EWA and the sport of equestrian.
Domestic Athlete of the Year This award recognises an athlete who has had one or more exceptional performances within Australia during the year. They always conduct themselves in an impeccable and sportsmanlike manner whilst an ambassador for the equestrian sport.
Domestic Horse of the Year This award recognises a horse that has had one or more exceptional performances during the year within Australia. This horse must be EA registered.
Event of the Year This award recognises a successful equestrian event conducted in Western Australia during 2016 that has provided a significant impact on community values, awareness of the sport and/or gained significant economic benefits.
High Performance Coach of the Year This award recognises a NCAS coach who has made a significant contribution to the success of a person or team that they have coached, or who has been the major cause for an increased standard of coaching in an equestrian sport. A high performance coach is someone who is coaching athletes whom excel at elite competition.
International Athlete of the Year This award recognises an athlete who has had one or more exceptional performances during the year on the International stage.
International Horse of the Year This award recognises horses that have had one or more exceptional performances during the year on the International stage. To be considered for this award the horse must either be ridden or owned by an EWA member. They do not need to be EA registered.
Official of the Year This award recognises an individual who has attained a level of excellence in the field of officiating (NOAS i.e. Course building, technical delegate and/or judging).
Owner of the Year This award recognises the owner who has contributed to the success of equestrian sport by providing horses of the highest quality to riders within the various equestrian disciplines. These horses have generally competed to an exceptional level during the year either on the State, National, or International stage.
Para Equestrian of the Year This award recognises an individual who has attained a level of excellence greater than that previously achieved by their peers or other sports people with a disability. The category is open to all athletes with a disability regardless of age. They must have consistently achieved at a high level either at local, State or National level in the last year, and displayed excellent sportsmanship, as well as putting something back into the sport.
Special Services to the Sport This award recognises an individual who, over a number of years, has shown an outstanding contributions and commitment to equestrian sport, or the industry as a whole. The recipient may be anyone who has contributed to the development and excellence of equestrian sports such as an administrator, a volunteer, a competitor, or a coach.
Volunteer of the Year This award recognises an individual who voluntarily contributes to the running of equestrian sport and events in Western Australia. They may be an administrator, coach, official, etc. They must recieve no remuneration (apart from reimbursement for expenses incurred) for their volunteer duties. They foster a positive difference in the lives of others through support and encouragement, often with self-sacrifice and without personal gain.
Young Athlete of the Year This award recognises an athlete who is 18 or less than 18 years of age as at 31 December 2016 who has consistently achieved good results at either State, National, or International level in the last year. They will have displayed excellent sportsmanship, as well as putting something back into the sport.

Nomination Process

The following criteria apply to the nomination process for the Equestrian Western Australia Annual Awards:

  • The person nominating must be a member of EWA, EA, or an EWA affiliated club.
  • More than one nomination may be submitted, however each nomination must be completed separately.
  • All questions must be addressed for the nomination to be valid.
  • Nominations are considered for services and achievements during the period of January 2016 – December 2016 for all categories except ‘Special Services to the Sport' which is judged for services and achievements over a number of years.
  • Two high resolution images (one head shot and one action image) are mandatory with each submission. These images are to be emailed to [email protected] by close of nominations.
  • Supporting material including photographs will not be returned after judging.
  • A nominee's attendance at the Awards Ceremony will be at their own cost.
  • EWA may use information provided in the nomination forms for publicity or other award applications.
  • Late nominations will not be accepted.

Selection Process

Award winners will be selected by a Panel consisting of representatives from the EWA Board and independent representatives. The finalists will be determined by the quality of the submissions and how well they address the criteria. The Panel may consider other supporting information (e.g. competition results) to support applications.
