Philippa Collier, Lifetime Service Award Nominee, Equestrian WA Awards

Good Horsemanship, Hard Work, and the Right People Around You

Philippa has spent more than 35 years involved in equestrian sport, quietly helping young riders in Western Australia build skills, confidence and a genuine love of eventing. As an EA Level 2 coach and coach educator based in the Perth Hills, she brings decades of experience as a rider, coach and mentor, and is widely respected for her practical, no nonsense approach.

She supports riders through individual coaching, the Junior Equestrian Development Squad, and Yes WA clinics in Capel and Dryandra. Philippa is also a familiar face at competitions, often travelling to events to walk courses, offer guidance and support riders when it counts.

Her involvement goes well beyond coaching. Philippa is on the Perth Horse Trials committee, is head coach of Yes WA and Eastern Hills Pony Club, and plays a hands on role as course dresser at Wooroloo and Equestrian In The Park.

When asked what makes her most proud, Philippa talks about people, not results.

“I am very proud of riders I have helped as youngsters who have worked their way through the ranks, from Pony Club Championships over east to placing at 3 star and 5 star events in Adelaide,” she said.

“I am also proud of establishing the Yes WA squad 12 years ago with the support of parents. It is an affordable squad for young event riders who want to improve their skills with a team behind them. It is not elitist, it is about learning and supporting each other, especially at events.”

When it comes to success in equestrian sport, Philippa keeps things simple and honest.

“If a rider wants to be successful, the horse’s welfare has to come first, always. You need to be hardworking and resilient, because there are many more downs than ups. Pick your support team carefully and listen to them, too much outside advice can be confusing. And be gracious to and about other competitors.

Her message is clear. Success comes from good horsemanship, sticking at it, and surrounding yourself with people who genuinely want to see you and your horse do well.
