EWA Welfare Corner: Bit Fitting

The bit is one of the primary communication tools between horse and rider, yet it is often overlooked when investigating behavioural or performance issues. Correct bit fitting is essential for both horse welfare and effective communication.

A bit that is too narrow may pinch the lips, while one that is too wide can slide excessively through the mouth, reducing stability and creating uneven pressure. Likewise, a bit that is too thick may not leave enough room for the tongue, particularly in horses with low palates or smaller mouths.

Signs that your horse may be uncomfortable with their bit include:

• Opening the mouth or crossing the jaw
• Head tossing or shaking
• Leaning heavily on the bit
• Reluctance to accept the contact
• Uneven rein contact
• Rubbing or sores at the corners of the mouth

It's important to remember that there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution. Every horse has unique oral anatomy, and selecting the correct width, thickness and style of bit should be based on the individual horse rather than trends or assumptions.

Regularly checking your horse's mouth, inspecting the bit for wear or damage, and reassessing fit as your horse develops or changes condition are all part of responsible horse ownership.

Good bit fitting is not about achieving more control, it's about ensuring your horse is comfortable and able to respond to clear, consistent communication. By prioritising comfort, we support both better welfare and better performance.

After all, a horse that is free from unnecessary discomfort is far more likely to work willingly and confidently with its rider.
