Equestrian WA Welcomes Rick Coate as New Chief Executive Officer

Equestrian Western Australia (EWA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Rick Coate as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective from 16 June 2025.

Rick brings over 20 years of executive leadership experience across the sport, hospitality, and member-based sectors, having held prominent roles with the American Club Singapore, the Hong Kong Cricket Club, and Disabled Wintersport Australia. Most recently, Rick was General Manager of the Royal Perth Yacht Club.

A seasoned leader in strategic planning, capital works delivery, and stakeholder engagement, Rick has successfully led governance reform and infrastructure projects in volunteer-driven environments, while working closely with athletes at all levels. His academic credentials include an MBA in Sports Management, a Bachelor of Business Management, and qualifications from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, including a Diploma in Corporate Governance.

EWA Chair Anne Wilkins said Rick’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for the organisation.

“Rick is an accomplished and values-driven leader with a strong understanding of the sporting landscape, governance, and member-based organisations. His diverse experience and people-first approach are exactly what we need as we navigate the next phase of growth and sustainability for equestrian sport in WA. The Board is confident Rick will bring fresh perspective while honouring the traditions and strength of our equestrian community.”

The appointment follows an extensive national recruitment process via Lester Blades Executive Search.

EWA also extends its sincere thanks to Hamish Johnson, who has served as Acting CEO during this period of transition. Hamish will support a formal handover with Rick from 16 to 18 June.

The EWA Board looks forward to working alongside Rick to continue strengthening EWA's role in supporting riders, coaches, officials, and volunteers across the state.
